Oppo BDP-83SE

$1,296.00 Released November, 2009

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Slick aesthetic (same as the original BDP-83). SACD and DVD-Audio support. 7.1 channel analog outputs.

The Cons:Considerably more expensive than the BDP-83. No built-in WiFi connectivity. Not a worth while upgrade over the BDP-83 if analog audio outputs aren't being used (main improvements to the SE are analog sound quality related).

The Oppo BDP-83SE is a Blu-ray disc player released as a successor to the BDP-83. Like its predecessor, the player can handle any type of format, including Blu-ray, DVD-Video/Audio, SACD, HDCD, CD, and more.

More importantly, the device offers full 1080p high-definition playback with decent quality audio. However, its predecessor didn’t have the power to match upscale audiophile-grade players, which is why the updated Special Edition includes an enhanced power supply circuit board and a completely redesigned audio circuit board, not to mention some changes to the I/O panel. In particular, the player hosts an ESS Technology Sabre32 DAC and an ESS Sabre Premier 8-channel DAC that power the device’s 7.1-channel analog audio ports. The result is greater three-dimensionality, improved resolution, and the ability to retrieve key bits of low-level musical detail.

Additional Information

According to the press release, the Sabre32 Ultra DAC differs from conventional sigma-delta DACs in that it “incorporates innovative patented circuits to deliver spectacular music with an unsurpassed sound stage, with up to 128 dB dynamic range and 0.0003% (-110 dB) total harmonic distortion.” Suffice it to say, the audio performance is 10-fold better.
